In this teaching unit, students delve into the origins of Ethnic Studies, exploring the Black Student Union’s advocacy for a more relevant education and the enduring 50-year struggle against state attempts to ban the course, driven by claims conflicting with the core principles of Ethnic Studies.
This introductory unit is critical and foundational to our upcoming year long Ethnic Studies curriculum. This unit focuses on defining Ethnic Studies and understanding the context which Ethnic Studies emerged from.
In line with our guiding principle of Popular Education, this unit centers around the essential question: “What social, political, and educational factors led to the emergence of Ethnic Studies?”
